The MIN Graduate Center supports doctoral researchers by travel grants for conferences and research stays. The experiences on these trips are diverse and very interesting. Here is a report by Malin Klein about participating in the Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) in New Orleans:

Das Annual Meeting der American Geophysical Union ist die größte Konferenz für die Erdsystem- und Weltraumwissenschaften und fand dieses Jahr in New Orleans statt. Für mich als Doktorandin der Erdsystemwissenschaften war sie die ideale Möglichkeit meine Forschung zum Thema „Retention von Mikroplastik in Forstökosystemen“ einem breitgefächerten und internationalen Publikum von Wissenschaftler:innen zu präsentieren. Die Konferenztage waren prall gefüllt mit inspirierenden Keynotes, Vorträgen und Posterpräsentation, gleichzeitig gab es genügend Möglichkeiten zum Austausch und Networken. Dabei war ich sehr positiv überrascht, wie viele Präsentationen es zum Thema Mikroplastik auf der Konferenz gab. An allen Tagen fanden hierzu Sessions statt, so dass ich rasch Kontakt zu Kolleg:innen knüpfen konnte. Besonders das freundliche Miteinander und das ehrliche Interesse an einem Austausch hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Zu meinem Poster konnte ich wichtiges Feedback sammeln und Kontakte zu anderen
Doktorand:innen mit ähnlichen Themen knüpfen.
Auf der AGU25 gab es auch eine große Ausstellungshalle in der Universitäten, Firmen und Forschungseinrichtungen wie ESRI, NASA und NOAA ausstellten. Zudem waren
wissenschaftliche Verlage wie Elsevier, Springer und Wiley vertreten. Neben Gesprächen mit den Ausstellenden zu führen, konnte man sich auch neue Datasets und Tools zeigen lassen. Auch gab es verschiedene Formate die besonders für mich als Doktorandin interessant waren, wie Bewerbungstrainings, kostenlose Headshots und die Möglichkeit einem Editor seine Paperidee zu pitchen.
Ich bin dem MINGZ sehr dankbar dafür, mir diese Konferenzteilnahme ermöglicht zu haben. Die Bewerbung war wirklich einfach und der Kontakt auf der AGU25 zu möglichen zukünftigen Kooperationspartnern, Arbeitgebern und auch das Feedback zu meinem Dissertationsprojekt wird mich bestimmt auf meinem Weg weiterbringen.

The Annual Meeting of the American Geophysical Union is the largest conference for earth system and space sciences, and this year it took place in New Orleans. For me, as a doctoral researcher in Earth system science, it was the ideal opportunity to present my research on “Retention of Microplastics in Forest Ecosystems” to a broad and international audience of scientists. The conference days were packed with inspiring keynote talks, presentations, and poster sessions, and at the same time there were plenty of opportunities to connect and network. I was especially positively surprised by how many presentations there were on the topic of microplastics. Sessions on this subject were held every day, so I was able to quickly make contact with colleagues. What I enjoyed most was the friendly atmosphere and the genuine interest in exchanging ideas. With my poster, I was able to gather important feedback and build connections with other doctoral researchers working on similar topics.

At AGU25, there was also a large exhibition hall where universities, companies, and research institutions such as ESRI, NASA, and NOAA were showcasing their work. In addition, scientific publishers such as Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley were represented. Beyond conversations with the exhibitors, you could also see and learn about new datasets and tools. There were also various formats that were particularly interesting for me as a doctoral researcher, such as application training, free headshots, and the opportunity to pitch a paper idea to an editor.

I am very grateful to MINGZ for making it possible for me to attend this conference. The application process was truly straightforward, and the contacts I made at AGU25 with potential future cooperation partners and employers, as well as the feedback I received on my dissertation project, will certainly help me on my way.
